What is osteopathy

Osteopathy is a hands on form of manual therapy with a particular focus on the musculoskeletal system.  Osteopaths believe that structure has a significant impact on function, and vica versa.

Osteopaths focus on how the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, gastrointestinal system and circulation function as a holistic unit to promote mobility and improve health.

What is the Osteopathic Philosophy?

The Four Principles of Osteopathy:

  • Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.

  • The body is a single dynamic unit of function; mind, body and spirit.

  • The body is capable of self-repair, self- healing and health maintenance.

  • Rational treatment is based on the employment of the above principles.

Who am I

Originally hailing from the Blue Mountains, I studied osteopathy at SCU, Lismore. In addition to clinical work, I have been a part-time lecturer, teaching 1st year osteopathy at SCU. I’m currently pursuing my PhD, focusing on ways to decrease head injuries in women's rugby league.

I absolutely love helping people get out of pain and back to having the freedom of movement! As an osteopath, I look at the body as a unit and take into consideration all aspects of the person. The mind, body, nutrition, stress and sleep. I’m registered with AHPRA, and SIRA accredited.

I have loved sports since I was a kid until I was about 14 when I suffered significant lower back injury, which had stopped me from playing sports.. Unable to do the things I loved due to pain, I was lucky enough to meet an osteopath that helped get me back on track. From that moment I decided I too wanted to be an osteopath so I could help others.

I played professional rugby league and rugby union over the last decade, I can related to being in pain and helping guide people out of it after dealing with my own fair share of injuries.

  • Osteopathy is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal system. By improving the alignment and function of your body, osteopathy helps relieve pain, restore mobility, and support overall health.

  • In your initial consultation, we’ll go over your health history, discuss your symptoms, and perform a physical assessment. This helps us identify the root cause of your pain and develop a personalized treatment plan. Expect a hands-on approach as we focus on restoring balance and movement to your body.

  • The number of sessions varies from person to person, depending on the severity and cause of your pain. After your initial consultation, we’ll have a clearer idea of your treatment plan, but typically, most people start to feel improvement after just a few visits.

  • Osteopathy can help with a wide range of conditions, including back and neck pain, headaches, joint pain, sports injuries, and postural issues. It can also be beneficial for chronic conditions like arthritis, sciatica, and repetitive strain injuries.

  • No, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see an osteopath. However, if you're being treated for a specific medical condition, it’s always a good idea to inform your healthcare provider that you're seeking osteopathic treatment. If you have had chronic pain/disease you are eligible for a Medicare plan. This is where you are able to receive 5 subsidised visits for treatment.

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, preferably activewear that allows for easy movement. I may ask you to move around during the assessment, so avoid anything restrictive.

  • Absolutely! Osteopathy is highly effective for treating sports injuries by improving flexibility, reducing pain, and promoting faster recovery. We’ll work with you to restore balance and function to the affected area, helping you return to your activity as quickly and safely as possible.

  • Booking an appointment is easy! You can schedule online through our website, or simply give us a call, and we’ll find a time that works best for you.

  • While some techniques may involve firm pressure or stretching, osteopathy should not cause too much pain. Most patients find the treatments somewhat relaxing. If you ever feel too much discomfort during a session, just let us know, and we’ll always adjust the technique to suit your comfort level.

  • While both chiropractic and osteopathy focus on treating issues related to the spine, muscles, and joints, our approaches differ.

    • Chiropractic primarily focuses on spinal adjustments to improve nervous system function. Chiropractors often focus on specific areas of the spine and may use quick, high-velocity thrusts.

    • Osteopathy takes a more holistic approach, treating the whole body rather than just focusing on the spine. Osteopaths use a wider range of gentle manual techniques, including soft tissue massage, stretching, and as well joint manipulation, to address the root cause of pain and improve overall body function.

Both are effective treatments, but osteopathy places more emphasis on how the body’s systems work together for overall health.

  • Yes, most private health insurance funds in Australia cover osteopathic treatments under Extras Cover. The level of coverage and rebates depend on your specific health fund and policy. It's a good idea to check with your provider to confirm details such as the number of treatments covered and the rebate amounts.

For your convenience, you can claim on-the-spot using HICAPS during your appointment—just remember to bring your health fund card!
